Superstition, Luck and the Poker Player

It is true that majority of gamblers are quite superstitious. They believe that their prowess can be influenced by some sort of supernatural powers from beyond.

Poker players are not an exemption. They are also as superstitious as other gamblers. Though success in poker lies mainly on skill, superstitious players believe that having a good luck charm or even a rabbit's foot could bring in some form of luck.

It might sound funny to modern players, but those who have a strong grasp on superstition may say that having something to influence luck is worth it. Some superstitious poker players believe that a dropped coin could spell good or bad luck. If it dropped facing up, it's a sign of good luck, if it's the other way around, might as well leave it alone.

Bringing a photo of a loved one on a casino night or a tournament is also a sign of good luck for most poker players. Others, like most African-American gamblers believe in the power of the MOJO. It is a mall pouch-like bag that contains magical items. The color of the bag is also influential. For instance, if the bag is green, it is said to be a money MOJO and it is great to bring at a poker game or tournament. Some of the magical items that can be placed in a MOJO are lucky roots from rare orchids, a piece of lodestone which is a magnetic ore that is believed to draw good luck.

Superstitious poker players also believe that some herbs and charms bring good luck. There are amulets and charm bracelets that most women poker players would wear during a game. Charm bracelets were quite popular with women especially during the early 20th century. In the 1960's, women from Europe and United States popularized the charm bracelet fad once again. Most women gamblers prefer to wear charm bracelets with four leaf clovers to bring in good luck.

Other popular charms that poker players consider powerful are: Horseshoe magnets for drawing luck Pig Charms for prosperity Number 13 charm for gambler's luck The Hamsa Hand to boost good luck by stopping the evil eye Gold and Pearl Wishbone set to make one's wishes come true Silver money bag with the dollar sign means wealth Black Cat charms for gambler's good luck and money Amulets such as shark's, alligator's and bear's teeth

The use of charms, though man-made, have brought and influenced some poker players' luck. Amulets are natural objects, and most superstitious poker players believe that they posses the strongest powers.

Poker players, who are fond of these supernatural beliefs and items, may look and sound weird. But somehow, those players who have been practicing their beliefs and had luck on their side would prove that their superstitions are true and effective.
